Buyers ask for 48 in coil in hard alloys and the mill makes 36 in. The coil is almost always slit afterward anyway. This calculator shows how many strips of your width come out of each coil width and how much scrap you leave.
Why mill width matters
Very few parts use the full coil width. A stamper running 300 mm (11.8 in) strips gets 3 strips from a 914 mm coil (14 mm scrap) and 4 from a 1,220 mm coil (20 mm scrap): the yield is practically the same. Ordering the width you know just because your last supplier had it can cost you a nearby supplier.

Today the 5000 series is made up to 36 in (914 mm). For narrower final widths, the 36 in coil is slit into strips with a yield comparable to 48 in; use the calculator to compare.
